TASLIMA UNDER HOUSE ARREST

Senior leader of the Communist party of India Gurudas Dasgupta has alleged that controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen is virtually under house arrest at a guest house in New Delhi.

However, he refused to disclose her current location.

"On Wednesday, I managed to speak to her on the phone and mind you, I was the first politician to do so. She told me that her movements were restricted and she was not allowed to move out," Dasgupta told reporters.

He slammed the statement made by Minister of External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee who had said that while the government would do everything to ensure that Nasreen was safe, she must not do anything to hurt others.

"She has been living in Kolkata for the last three years but she has not indulged in any kind of politics. She is a writer and you cannot curb her natural ability to write," he said.

When queried by rediff.com if the writer had told him that she had been forced to leave Kolkata, he shot back, "Even if she did tell me about that, I would not tell you."

Dasgupta added that he will request West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya to facilitate Nasreen's return to Kolkata. "It is unfortunate that she had to leave the city," he added.

PITTSBURGH CELEBRATES 250TH BIRTHDAY

That's what the organizers of Pittsburgh's 250th birthday celebration are hoping that people from here -- and around the country -- will do next year. The city plans to mark the anniversary of its naming with a yearlong series of events in 2008 that don't just commemorate the past but also celebrate the present in hopes of changing the way Pittsburghers, and others, perceive the city.

"I think there's a wonderful opportunity for us, as well as the people who don't live here, to recognize Pittsburgh for what it is," said Jim Rohr, head of the Pittsburgh 250th Anniversary Commission and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

Rohr said tourists who visit the city realize it's no longer a smoky steel town but a city with a thriving cultural district, world-class universities and an impressive vista. Pittsburghers, ironically, are most in need of convincing that their hometown has a lot more to offer, he said.

XP BEAST VISTA IN PERFORMANCE TESTS

Microsoft Corp's Windows XP operating system is about to get faster and Windows Vista isn't, according to a report that caused a stir online this week as industry watchers speculated that a zippier XP could keep customers from upgrading to Vista.

Microsoft, however, said it's too early to evaluate the two service packs it plans to release next year. Early versions are already in the hands of testers like Devil Mountain Software Inc, which helps big financial services companies track trading-floor computer performance.

Wellington, Fla.-based Devil Mountain Software ran several versions of XP and Vista through a test simulating common desktop computing tasks. It found the original Vista performed 50 percent to 100 percent slower than the prevalent XP Service Pack 2, or SP2.

Vista SP1, due out in the first quarter of 2008, barely improved the operating system's performance. But XP SP3, scheduled for the first half of 2008, did improve on XP's earlier performance, running 10 percent faster than SP2.

That's a strike against Vista for IT professionals on the fence about switching, according to Craig Barth, the company's chief technology officer.

Kevin Kutz, director of Microsoft's Windows Client group, said the company is working on speeding up tasks like moving files between PCs, but it's a work in progress.

Michael Cherry, an analyst for research group Directions on Microsoft, said it's impossible to say if Microsoft has started tuning Vista SP1 for speed. Even if XP gets faster, consumers and businesses may still switch to Vista.

"It might be an acceptable thing to me if it were slightly slower but more stable," Cherry said.

Benjamin Gray, an analyst for Forrester Research, said businesses will upgrade to Vista regardless, to "stay current with Microsoft's support life cycle.

It’s beginning to look like the IFPI will be the next MediaDefender. Earlier this week we already posted about leaked email correspondence between a lawyer and the IFPI, in which they discussed requesting confidential information from the Swedish police on an ongoing police investigation involving The Pirate Bay.

Apparently they had plans to use this information to take on the popular BitTorrent site, but it seems that plans like that always backfire.

The main domain of the IFPI - ifpi.org - is still working, but when people try to access ifpi.com they are redirected to a Pirate Bay server, showing the text: “International Federation of Pirate Interests.”

We contacted Brokep, one of the administrators of The Pirate Bay, and he told TorrentFreak: “International Federation of Pirate Interests (IFPI) is the new international federation we’re starting in order to get the word of piracy spread.”

The WHOIS info clearly shows that ifpi.com - the domain that used to be registered to the IFPI - is now registered to Brokep. We asked him if The Pirate Bay is responsible for the domain hack, and he told us: “It’s not a hack, someone just gave us the domain name. We have no idea how they got it, but it’s ours and we’re keeping it.”

SCHOOL SUSPENDS BOY FOR USING MEHANDI

A disciplinary action by a school here against a Class III student threatens to snowball into a religious controversy. The student’s father, Ganesh Ram, a lawyer by profession, has approached the State Human Rights Commission alleging discrimination against his son on religious grounds.

On November 19, Doveton Matric Higher Secondary School here suspended Ram’s son for 10 days and sent him home for coming to the school after applying mehndi (henna). His father says it is a violation of his son’s human rights and has called for revoking the suspension.

“Why should my innocent child be penalised? The mehndi was used because I am going to Sabarimala and on the day of the pooja on the first of the Karthigai month (in the Tamil calender), it is a custom to use ‘mardhani’ (mehndi). My sister put it on him,” an agitated Ram told this website's newspaper.

Confirming the suspension, the school authorities said the boy had been sent home and asked to come back only after the “mehndi has faded out and that principal Ms Petal Theodore had only been doing her duty”.

“There should be discipline at any cost. We have our rules and the principal is being paid to run the school and school means discipline,” they said.

To justify their action, they cited the school handbook which states that boys should not wear long hair and girls should not wear gold ear-rings, nail polish, flowers or mehendi. And the last applied to boys as well.

Ram, on the other hand, says the action is too harsh particularly when the half-yearly exams are scheduled to begin from November 30. He has termed this as “a religious discrimination by a Christian school”. He has also charged that when he pleaded with the principal to revoke the suspension he was abused by her in front of his son.

A month back, about 100 girl students of a primary school in Pune were sent back to their homes when they came to school after applying henna, inviting angry reactions from their parents. Ram, meanwhile, has got his son admitted to another school.
